Random Song Stuck in my Head that I only Know one Line of

We Didn't Start the Fire Billy Joel

I actually know more that one line of this song, but probably not in a row. I heard it at the restaurant where I ate dinner tonight here in Maui.

Random Thoughts on the Academy Awards

These are just my opinionated insights, and not listed in any particular order. Also, I am in a pissy mood right now (don't worry, unrelated to the Academy Awards) and that might be reflected in the tone of this blog. Enjoy anyway.......

1. It is not cool to skip an awards show.

And yes, I am talking to you Keira Knightly. Hell, even Johnny Depp showed up.....plus, he washed his hair! If you are nominated (which she wasn't, I know) or are a leading role in a nominated film (which she was), you are supposed to show up. It is how you honor your fans....by giving them the chance to tear apart your dress and hairstyle choice, and to comment on your need to eat a cheeseburger.

She was probably the one person I was most excited to see on the red carpet. I was secretly hoping she was going to wear that stunning green dress she wore in Atonement. It was fabulous, and I thought it would have been very festive of her to sport it.

2. No Country for Old Men should not have won best picture.

Only 2 times in my adult movie going life did I ever want to walk out of the theater before a flick was over......this one and Sixth Sense (I know a lot of people liked that movie.....but I figured it out from the beginning, and thought the rest was pointless)

NCFOM was confusing, annoying, and too many things happen that made absolutely no sense. I am sure that all of the critics, and normal people who said they liked this movie did so only to seem arty and intellectual. It was crap. I am one of the few people to admit I didn't get it, and I am proud of that. I bet this whole movie was just a practical joke from the Coen Brothers. They punked America, and I am just waiting for them to admit it.

3. When you win 4 Oscars, try to sound sincere in your speeches.

And yes, this is another bash on the Coen Brothers. I'm not asking you to chant "you like me, you really like me" or anything, but how about a smile? Plus, you are brothers....you think one of you could have thanked mom.

Oh, and that sandbox comment.....please. No one wants to play in your sandbox. You probably did a number 2 in it.

4. The show could have been renamed the "English as a Second Language" Oscars.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love other cultures, and countries. However, other countries have awards shows also, where they nominate people from their country. I don't want to make a big deal about this one, because I did enjoy the international flair a little, but I do think it was overkill to have every major acting award go to a foreigner. There I said it.

5. Was it really necessary to have 3 songs from one movie nominated for best song?

That benefited no one. First of all, there were a lot of movie with original songs this year, and there could have been 2 places for them. Second, even if you liked the songs in Enchanted, you were forced to pick one, and therefore split the vote in thirds, eliminating the possibility of an Enchanted song winning the statue.

That's all I got. I was not really happy with a lot of the winner choices, so that put a damper on the Academy Awards for me. It is still my favorite award show of the year though. Looking forward to next years nominees...........

Zinger Quote of the Day

"Women like to think they are complicated. I know better."

So, as I have stated before, I am perpetually 16. Therefore, you should not be surprised that I am obsessed with the show GossipGirl. It's so fab and hilar. It's like Cruel Intentions meets Beverly Hills 90210. This quote is from one of the characters in that show, Chuck Bass. (Back-story: he is the shady and conniving, but dripping with false charm, son of a wealthy hotelier who owns The New York Palace Hotel, and, incidentally, also lives in that hotel.)

Though not the foxiest of gentlemen on the show, I do so enjoy that in every scene, Chuck is wearing a scarf. Fantastic. I also was intrigued to hear that he's a Brit in real life. That upped his hotness quota by 34%.

Tune in to the CW's only big hit this year. You will be instantly addicted. Monday nights @ 7PM

P.S. If you get as obsessed as I am, pick up a copy of OUT Magazine this month. The GossipGirl boys are on the cover. Funny story: I found out that this was the case last week in South Beach Miami, and immediately went out (no pun intended) to buy the magazine. How funny was it that I was in, arguably, the gayest city in the country, and I could not find a gas station, book store, hotel gift store, or quick shop that had a copy of it? Maybe they were all sold out already......very possible. Those GG boys are handsome.

XOXO GossipGirl. (Fans will understand.)

"Not this Time. Not this Year."

"Not This Time. Not This Year"
All the Obama fans (me included) are going gaga over "Yes We Can". It has become Obama's catchphrase for this election. There is a Will.i.am video and song set to one of Obama's speeches that over 5 million people have viewed on youtube in the last week. Impressive.

In fact, it is so popular, that the Obama campaign is actually being sued for copyright infringements by more that one party! (Unfortunately the lawsuit in this country is a sign that a lot of people are responding to you) There is some children's book called Yes We Can. Also the estate of Sammy Davis Jr. is all up in arms because it is too close to "Yes I Can" - the title of Sammy's autobiography. I even heard an outside rumor that the producers of Avenue Q want in on the legal action because of that musical's song called "Yes We Can".

Anyway, they all are crazy, but I digress......I have to be honest that the Obama phrase that he uses in his speeches all the time that I most enjoy is "Not this Time, Not this Year. " I heard him say this, and it really put into words what I have been saying about this election all along that seemed so different from other elections in the past.

So....just for fun, I am going to list the things I didn't like about elections in the past, and I am thrilled to be able to say "Not this Time; Not this Year" about. I fully expect this to be Velveeta, and a little preachy. Enjoy.......

1. Four years ago, I spent the entire pre nomination season not really feeling attached to any of the candidates on the democratic side. I felt like the party was really scraping the barrel with everyone they put up.

Not this time. Not this year.

I was a wreck the whole week before the Missouri primary because I had been on team Clinton for awhile, but I was so impressed by Obama lately. My problem was that I thought both candidates were so great, I was not able to decide between them. I had a panic attack at the electronic voting thing. The old lady volunteering actually came to see if I was alright, because she thought I was confused how to use the machine. I was very embarrassed to tell her that the reason I was still staring at the machine after 20 minutes was that I was still deciding who to vote for. I went with Obama in the end.....and definitely feel I have made the right decision.

2. Last prez election, I got really annoyed at people I knew who were completely ignorant on the election, and could really care less about politics at all, that I felt were blindly voting for Bush again. They seemed to not even know what the issues were, or care that that our President politics differed greatly from their best interests.

Not this time. Not this year.

I am actually amazed at friends of mine who are educating themselves this time round. I'm ecstatic that a couple of my die-hard GOP fan buds went blue state on me in the Missouri primary. Even among my staunchly Republicans friends, I feel like I have had intelligent conversations, and lively debates about the issues, that didn't end with me thinking they are delusional like a lot of "across party line" convos I had last year ended.

3. Even with the P. Diddy's "Get out and Vote" thing last year that seemed to get a lot of headlines, young voters and college kids did not really rock the vote, or go out in the droves that everyone thought would happen in '04. When all was said and done, the percentages of voters from 18-25 was just as low as it has been every election.

Not this time. Not this year.

The overwhelming support that Obama has seen on college campuses is phenomenal. Even the Hillary campaign talked about rampant support from universities. Many media sources have said that the record number of voters in the primaries this year has been in part due to the number of young voters. I don't know the reason...it could be that their was a small baby boom around 20 years ago that means a lot of first time voters this election, or that the candidates are actually making an effort to engage young people like not seen 4 years ago. Whatever the reason may be...it is awesome!!!! And, I hope this momentum keeps going.

Personal story: I had a very liberal; somewhat zany, social studies teacher in high school, and when I was a senior...there were a handful of students who were 18 by election time. (I was not one....I missed voting for Clinton against Bush Sr. in 1992 by 13 days. I was pissed.) Anyway, this teacher let those of voting age leave campus during her class on Election Day to go vote. I thought that was a great idea. When I was in college, I remember that there a program to drive students who didn't have a car, to the polling places in Columbia. I want to, and probably will, hear more stories like that this go around. This is going to be a year where the younger voices will be heard. I bet a lot of musicians and actors will have a lot of similar to "rock the vote" programs starting this summer. I am curious to see how creative they get.

4. The election last time, I feel, got very religious and it seemed the morality police were vocal through the campaigns in '04.

Not this time. Not this year.

If it is McCain that gets the nomination for the Republicans, I would like to see the GOP even try to run with some ridiculous family values bullshit for this election - considering McCain's 2nd trophy wife, whose like 25 years younger than him, and has a prescription drug problem.

Also, I will be curious to see the reaction of the catholic priest and bishops who were so vocal last election about it being a sin to vote for a candidate who was either prochoice or an advocate of gay rights. Well, McCain is neither prochoice or an advocate of gay rights, but he is also against a constitutional amendment determining that life begins at conception, or one explicitly stating that marriage is between a man and a woman. That's not going to be good enough for the Archbishop Burkes of this country, and without a full-on prolife and anti-gay rights candidate, I bet priests and ministers are going to have to avoid talking politically about these subjects on the pulpit (which if they want to keep their tax free statuses, they should be doing anyway). This is a big one for me...keeping the churches out of this election.

5. In '04, I think the main reason Bush won had to do with playing on the country's still fresh fear of terrorism, and his leadership for the ongoing war.

Not this time. Not this year.

I think everyone can agree that this war, whether you support it or not, has not progressed well. And it certainly has not curbed the threat of terrorism in the least. Now I may be generalizing her, but most people in this country want an ending to it. Either as soon as possible, as most Democrats feel.......or with an organized, more structured plan from this point forward, as most Republicans feel. No one can argue that it has been more expensive (both monetarily and in causalities) than anyone reasonably expected.

I know I am not a Republican (that's an understatement) but I can't see a lot of GOPers really supporting this "hundred year war if we have to" phrase that McCain was quoted as saying. That perspective is going to have to be watered down when this election heats up, and I am A.O.K. with that. I was against the war in the beginning, and I was certainly sick and tired of hearing support for it during the '04 campaigns.

"Not this Time. Not this Year." That's my slogan until November. Obama rocks!

My Top Five List Drama

I just made a disturbing realization about "My Top Five List" (the list of celebrities that I am jonesin' for, and will always - no matter my dating or marital status - be allowed to try to make out with if given the opportunity)

My list is dwendling!!!!!!

The order is........

1. David Beckham
2. Neil Patrick Harris - as both Doogie Hoswer and Barney on How I Met your Mother
3. Ryan Reynolds
4. Heath Ledger
5. Matthew McConaughey

NPH revealed he is gay( I was debating whether that was a reason to remove him, because I don't have a problem with the orientation, but having him on the list is a waste because he will never want to make out with me even if I have the oppurtunity to do so). And, the untimely, unfortunate death of Heath Ledger has lead to now only having 3 people on my top 5 list. How depressing a thought to have on Valentine's Day. I have decided to spend the rest of the week debating who to replace them with. Here are some people in the running......

Conan O'Brien - love his gawky nerdiness

Shane West - I can't explain this one because he is so thin, but something about him brings out the tiger in me. Growl.

Ryan Gosling - not only is he on fire hot, I would attack him just based on his character in the movie The Notebook.

Zack Gilford / Taylor Kitch Sandwich - Can I put a combo of guys as one spot on my list? They are from the same show Friday Night Lights. I think that since they are both new on the scene, and the idea of their lasting celebrity is minimal, they should be allowed as a group package. If not, the edge goes to Zack Gilford who plays "Matt Serecen". I love that Southern boy accent.

Joey Lawence - This is an interesting one. He was my number one from the beginnning. (It is weird, I know, but it goes back to the Blossom days) I felt I was forced to remove him from the list after his appearance on Dancing with the Stars...what a fiasco. He looked so scary with the tight clothes and scary bald head. However, he has been a crush of mine since I was 14. Maybe its time to bring him back.

Matt Damon - always a classic.

Chace Crawford - new to my hot guy radar, but WOW. He's the Hottie McHotterson from New Hottersville that plays "Nate Archibald" in the fantastic new show Gossip Girl". This one may make me a cougar though. I think he's like 20.

I will ponder these choices and other ones I think of. Stay tuned for the updated final list. I may even laminate it channeling "Ross" from Friends.

Random Song Stuck in my Head that I only Know one Line of

Breathe (2 am ) Anne Nalick

Tiffani always told me that this song reminded her of me. Especially the first 2 lines. (incidently, the only lines of the song I know except for the chorus!)

Dating (and Breaking Up) in the Millenium

So. Without giving you too much detail into my life outside this blog, I am going to share with you a personal story that actually happen a couple of weeks ago. However, it was not until just now when I was retelling the story to a friend, that I realized what a sign o' our times this situation was.....

I had been dating someone casually for a few months. While I was on a trip, we hadn't really talked to eachother, except through his blackberry, my computer, and both our cellphones with text message capabilities. We were keeping in touch until.....and I will spare you the dets why, but I sent a "could be construed as" break-up text. He responded with an email from his blackberry that solidified that my text was..... indeed..... a breakup text. I then sent an email reaction to his breakup response that pretty much left nothing else to say.

So there you have it. A relationship (I guess I will use that label) ends with no words actually being spoken to either party involved, but a LOT being said.

My question now ( and I reralize this sounds very 60 Minutes fluff investigative report of the week) .... But was all this telecommunication crap an improvement?

I don't know about every situation, but I gotta tell ya, I think technology was a good thing here. And I will list the reasons why.

1. I have a tendency to analyze, ney... over analyze, conversations.

How great was it that I had the emails to refer to when I was trying to decide his "tone"? Big Benefit. Also, when I was telling the "break up" story to my friends (which all girls do), it was awesome to be able to quote exactly from the email what was "said" instead of trying to remember the exact wording. A few close and trusted friends actually got to read the emails.

2. Complete Thoughts and Ideas

I got to say everything I wanted to get out. If that had been a phone or in person breakup, we would have interupted eachother. We would not have had time to gather our thoughts, and make sure the other person understood exactly what we were trying to say. You also run the risk of one person hanging up or just walking away. No one can walk away from an email.

3. The Obvious Emotional Reasons

No one's yelling. No one's crying. No one's looking at the other person, and in disbeilief that they are actually saying what is coming out of their mouth!

In conclusion (I use this phrase, because I was trying to answer a question here...Was it better that we broke up over email and text messaging, instead of in person?) I have to say "Yes". I like the way this dating saga ended. Complete . Clean. Easy. Pulling off a band aid.

I hope the rest of my relationships that end are as painless as this one. I will now continue my search for, what everyone is looking for.....the relationship that never ends. Wish me luck in that quest.......

What I see outside my window.....

This will be fun to do every now and then depending on where I am.

Right now, I an sitting at my computer in our workroom of the hotel on Miami Beach, and I am looking at 2 peeps kite surfing on very choppy, but very inviting sparkling blue water. It's brilliant...and I don't mean that in the British way (beautiful or very good). I mean it really is brilliant. The water is reflecting the bright red and yellow of the kites, and the sun is shining down on the ocean. I almost need sunglasses, and I am sitting inside.

I forgot how there are still some fabulous beaches in the continential US. Maybe I am jaded because when I think of beaches, I don't think Florida anymore. What a shame.

Remember how I said I change my mind a lot?

So, I'm on Team Obama now.

I made that decision literally 5 minutes before I walked in the United Church of Christ (how ironic) where I was to vote in the primary election last Tuesday. Hilary RC had slowly been moving her way out of my favor for about a month, but I never expected myself to jump ship. Seriously.

I still like my girl Hil, and would dance at the party if she gets the nomination, but something just attracted me to Obama. I think it was that he voted against the war from the beginning. I was also against it all along, and never bought into the WMD bullshit that everyone was throwing around 4 years ago.

Maybe I just decided we need someone totally new to the White House. We had 8 years of someone whose father had been there. Perhaps subconsciencely I had an issue with the fact that Hilary had already lived there. Who knows why I make the choices I make.

Anyway.....I am happy with my new team. Its raising a lot of money very quickly. Obama had a great showing yesterday in the 3 state primaries. And, it looks like it will be McCain from the Red side. I think I will enjoy watching Obama take on that crusty old war mongor in a debate. It will probably be entertaining. I hope McCain's combover falls to the side and hangs a little on National T.V.

Thank God (again how ironic) Romney's out. I know a lot of Blue staters didn't think that was a good thing, because McCain might be harder to beat with his "very liberal for a conservative" views, especially on social policy, but I really didn't like the Mormons' main man, and am happy he packed up his tent and went home.

Also, you know what else I am enjoying??? Ann Coulter. There I said it. I know no one who knows me would ever hear me say that I am enjoying anything about Ann Coulter, but since its probably going to be McCain, does that mean she is going to be on Team Hilary like she promised???

(Backstory: Super Conservative and outspoken radio host Ann Coulter - picture a female version of Rush Limbaugh - said awhile back that she was going to vote for Hilary if McCain got the nomination)

Let the super exciting election season keep on keepin' on. And I thought I would be bored when football ended. Ha!

Random Song Stuck in my Head that I only Know one Line to

What's Left of Me Nick Lachey

Don't read too much into this though. I know the last couple weeks of my life have not been a carnival, but this song is not a reflection of my world. I actually heard it in the elevator of the hotel on my way to work this morning. I am a little embarassed to say that I have always enjoyed the tune. Its catchy!

My Intent

I just reread that title, and it sounds like I am about to tell you which school I have signed to play college ball for...... If that were true, it would be Ivy League, but I'm not sure which school. Actually, it might be another school. That discussion might have to be a blog in itself. I can see the title now. If I were to play College Football, where would I Play"

Anyway, what I mean by "my intent" is that I have had some peeps tell me that I haven't blogged in awhile. The response to that is that I was in the 'Lou. I think, unless something is really itchin' me to write, I am pretty much only going to write my blog when I am on the road. My thoughts come a little easier when I am either sitting through mindless meetings, or stuck at an info desk in a hotel lobby somewhere. Plus, more blog worthy things tend to happen to me while I am traveling.

So...here I am in Miami. Specifically, Miami Beach. I love this place. it is a myriad of culture, art, arcitecture, and alcohol...all at a balmy 86 Degrees. Awesome. My hair curls up nicely here. There is always something to entertain. (In fact, Miami is in my top 10 of people watching cities) If it weren't for my inclination to "glisten" in climates like this, I would be in heaven.

So...look for some insights in the next week or so, while I enjoy a break from the St. Louis late winter temps.
