Random Thoughts on the Academy Awards

These are just my opinionated insights, and not listed in any particular order. Also, I am in a pissy mood right now (don't worry, unrelated to the Academy Awards) and that might be reflected in the tone of this blog. Enjoy anyway.......

1. It is not cool to skip an awards show.

And yes, I am talking to you Keira Knightly. Hell, even Johnny Depp showed up.....plus, he washed his hair! If you are nominated (which she wasn't, I know) or are a leading role in a nominated film (which she was), you are supposed to show up. It is how you honor your fans....by giving them the chance to tear apart your dress and hairstyle choice, and to comment on your need to eat a cheeseburger.

She was probably the one person I was most excited to see on the red carpet. I was secretly hoping she was going to wear that stunning green dress she wore in Atonement. It was fabulous, and I thought it would have been very festive of her to sport it.

2. No Country for Old Men should not have won best picture.

Only 2 times in my adult movie going life did I ever want to walk out of the theater before a flick was over......this one and Sixth Sense (I know a lot of people liked that movie.....but I figured it out from the beginning, and thought the rest was pointless)

NCFOM was confusing, annoying, and too many things happen that made absolutely no sense. I am sure that all of the critics, and normal people who said they liked this movie did so only to seem arty and intellectual. It was crap. I am one of the few people to admit I didn't get it, and I am proud of that. I bet this whole movie was just a practical joke from the Coen Brothers. They punked America, and I am just waiting for them to admit it.

3. When you win 4 Oscars, try to sound sincere in your speeches.

And yes, this is another bash on the Coen Brothers. I'm not asking you to chant "you like me, you really like me" or anything, but how about a smile? Plus, you are brothers....you think one of you could have thanked mom.

Oh, and that sandbox comment.....please. No one wants to play in your sandbox. You probably did a number 2 in it.

4. The show could have been renamed the "English as a Second Language" Oscars.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love other cultures, and countries. However, other countries have awards shows also, where they nominate people from their country. I don't want to make a big deal about this one, because I did enjoy the international flair a little, but I do think it was overkill to have every major acting award go to a foreigner. There I said it.

5. Was it really necessary to have 3 songs from one movie nominated for best song?

That benefited no one. First of all, there were a lot of movie with original songs this year, and there could have been 2 places for them. Second, even if you liked the songs in Enchanted, you were forced to pick one, and therefore split the vote in thirds, eliminating the possibility of an Enchanted song winning the statue.

That's all I got. I was not really happy with a lot of the winner choices, so that put a damper on the Academy Awards for me. It is still my favorite award show of the year though. Looking forward to next years nominees...........

Love it! You forgot to give big props to Diablo Cody, though, and the fact she didn't wear Stuart Weitzman's shoes b/c he didn't tell her it was a publicity stunt. Badass.
