Great New Find in NYC

We went into Manhattan Friday night from this program I am operating in New Jersey (very close to Rutgers University actually).

We went to the lower East Side or East Village (there was some debate among the crowd as to which section of the fine city we were actually in) Anyway.....

I discovered the most super fun Karaoke bar of my vast Karaoke bar experience!

It's called "Sing Sing". It is, of course, a creative play on words that was not lost on me. The karaoke reference is obvious. And, I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I believe that is a Japanese or Asian phrase of some sort. Wasn't that the name of that Giant Panda at the Washington DC Zoo? I will research this...........

The reason that is relevant is that the place had a very Asian feel. They served Chinese and Japanese beers. All the bartenders and waitstaff were Asian. Also, they had a huge Sake menu of by the glass and by the bottle.

The best part about it was the singing. Instead of having a stage, they had a bunch of wireless microphones that, when it was your turn to sing, they handed to you, and you could sing and move all around the bar. Hilarious!!!! Drunk guys were walking up to girls and singing to them....reminiscent of Tom Cruise in Top Gun singing You've Lost that Loving Feeling. There were a bunch of screens with the words, so you were never having to stay in one place even if you didn't know them.

It was very Vegas lounge singer -eque and I loved it. I felt like more than just a karaoker....I was an entertainer. I did have to clear a small area to perform my dance moves to Holding out for a Hero, but the "very into my singing talents" crowd was happy to oblige.

Another feature of this place that was unique was the private karaoke rooms available for rent. They had their own screen, and couches and could sit probably about 5-8 peeps. I could understand how some would think this was cool, but let's face it....if you are not going to perform for the masses at a bar, you might as well be at your couch at home with a $29 singing machine from Walmart.

Can't wait to go back to this place, but alas I don't believe it will be on this trip. I do understand that the same owners have one in Denver. Maybe that trip will be soon. I think it would not be as cool there. What I mean is that, this was a hole in the wall. Only Manhattan can be home to a plae like this. I think if I saw it in a Strip mall somewhere, it would lose the attraction.
